- Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Oxford University - This is the official website of the of Social and Cultural Anthropology department of Oxford University, England. It provides links to several useful anthropological web resources. The Institute's strongest emphasis is on the ethnography of the non Euro-American world. But the site is comprehensive and touches on every aspect of anthropology.
- PrimateLit - A bibliographic database for people interested in primates--prosimians, monkeys and apes, this site includes over 200,000 citations (1940 - ) relating to research, conservation, and veterinary care of nonhuman primates. Managed by the Wisconsin Primate Research Center in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin Libraries in Madison, this is a free service.
- Public Anthropology - Created and maintained by scholar Robert Borofsky (Hawaii Pacific University), this site contains e-journals, a book series, a collection of writings, a photo gallery, and a roundtable forum for discussion. The ongoing Anthropology Journal Archive Project provides summaries of articles in American Anthropologist back to 1888, with updates and the addition of the journals Current Anthropology and Human Organization pending.
- Science Niche - Nicely done portal to information in all branches of science. Very useful site.
Linguistics

- Ethnologue (Languages of the world) - This site is maintained by SIL International (formerly known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics). The purpose of SIL international is to work with language communities worldwide to facilitate language-based development through research, translation, and literacy. This site includes 164 language maps, 345 overviews of language situations by country, 851 bibliographic references, 6,809 language descriptions Language name index: 41,000+ alternate names and dialect names Language family index: 109 language family trees 78,381 hypertext.
- iLoveLanguages - Formerly known as the Human Languages Page, this site is a comprehensive catalog of language-related Internet resources. It contains more than 2000 reviewed links. Also useful for those who need online language lessons, translating dictionaries, native literature, translation services, software, language schools, or even a book to buy on a language related topic.
Cultural Anthropology
- Kinship and Social Organization: Interactive Online Tutorial - Created by Brian Shwimmer of the Department of Anthropology, University of Manitoba, Canada, this is an easy-to-digest, non-linear approach to studying cultural representations.
- American FactFinder Data Sets - Provides characteristics of Americans grouped by specific characteristics in the United States and territories. Now includes summary files on American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs) living on or off AIAN lands (with detailed data for over 1,000 tribal groups).
- The National Park Service Southeast Archeological Center - Provides access to publications, project descriptions, and other agency information for the SEAC jurisdiction, which extends into the Southwest and Caribbean. Publications range from popular brochures to scholarly/technical materials.
Physical Anthropology
- Human Origins and Evolution in Africa - This page was established by Professor Jeanne Sept, Indiana University, Bloomington, to maintain links to this constantly growing scientific database and teaching resources for her students.
- The Smithsonian Institution Human Origins Program - Site presents the Smithsonian Institution's commitment to furthering scientific knowledge about the evolutionary origin of human beings, including our species' relationship and interactions with the natural world. Presented here is information about ongoing fieldwork and new projects in Africa, Asia, and Europe that are investigating accumulating data about early human adaptation, evolution, and environmental change.
Electronic Journals
- Theoretical Anthropology - produced at the Institut für Völkerkunde (Institute of Social Anthropology), University of Vienna as a co-project with the Commission on Theoretical Anthropology (COTA) of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) and the Society for Caribbean Research. Deals with all subdisciplines and methodological schools as well as related disciplines.
Museums
- Field museum of Natural History, Chicago - With its declared purpose to accumulate and disseminate knowledge, and preserve and exhibit objects illustrating art, archaeology, science and history, this museum's website is both informative and aesthetically pleasing.
- London Museum of Natural History - The Natural History Museum is the United Kingdom's national museum of natural history. It is an invaluable taxonomy and biodiversity resource.
- UC-Berkeley Museum of Paleontology - This museum is indeed more than your avaerage museum. It is also an active research center that houses one of the nation's largest fossil collections and the facilities for the study of these fossils. The focus is on fields related to paleontology, including systematics and evolution of protists, plants and animals; biostratigraphy; paleoecology; paleoceanography; paleobiogeography; and paleoenvironmental analysis.
- University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology - The Museum of Anthropology is one of the major archaeological research and teaching facilities in the United States. It does not maintain exhibit space. This web site is therefore designed to make available images and information about selected collections from the museum's holdings, divided into these divisions: Ethnology, Ethnobotany, Asian, Great Lakes, North America, Old World, New World, and Physical.

- American Anthropological Association - The American Anthropological Association (AAA) is the primary professional society of anthropologists in the United States and the world's largest professional organization of individuals interested in anthropology.
- Archaeological Institute of America - Founded in 1879, the AIA is the oldest and largest archaeological organization in North America, with more than 11,000 members around the world.
- Association for feminist anthropology - For professionals and students interested in a feminist and gendered approach to the disciplinee of anthropology.
- Society for Economic Anthropology - The SEA describes itself as "a group of anthropologists, economists and other scholars who are interested in the connections between economics and social life." It welcomes anthropologists from all four subfields of the discipline.
- The Royal Anthropological Institute (Britain) - The Institute is a non-profit charity that provides a forum for anthropology as a whole, embracing social anthropology, biological anthropology and the study of material culture. - Earth Sciences at the National Academies - From The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council (NRC). Hyperlinks provide access to the free full-text of thousands of e-books published by the national Academies Press as well as journals, news articles, and other publications.
- EPA Science Inventory - A searchable database of more than 4,000 scientific and technical work products, providing project descriptions (abstracts), contacts for additional information, and electronic links to final reports and related research. Includes 9 topical areas: aging initiative, contaminated sediments, ecological assessment tools, genomics, tribal science, children's health, cumulative risk, environmental justice, and non-indigenous species.
- Nice Geography Sites (Utrecht Univ., Holland) - Lengthy web directory that includes remote sensing sites; however, not annotated and not arranged by narrow field, so it is somewhat difficult to use.
- Yahoo Geography Page - Nicely arranged by category and annotated; includes human geography and remote sensing categories.
- Internet Resources in the Earth Sciences - From University of California-Berkeley; includes internet directory, cartography section with aerial photography and remote sensing, searchable ejournals etc; designed for Berkeley students, but most resources available to all.
- Resources for Geographers - Annotated webguide from Colorado University; “Starting Places” link provides good set of sites by category, and the “Journals” section provides a good list of both print and ejournals.
- WWW Virtual Library: Remote Sensing - Annotated and well maintained web directory in all aspects of remote sensing; searchable.
- Structural Geology on the Web - This is a collection of hypertext links to assorted structural geology and tectonics resources available on the world-wide web that was developed originally by Steven Schimmrich while a graduate student at the University of Illinois. Site is easily navigated through the self-explanatory categories. Includes links to research groups and academic groups, and organizations.
Gazetteers
- Geographic Nameserver (US locations) - Searchable MIT site which ironically suggests the following two sites as more comprehensive and current.
- Geographic Names Information System (US Geological Survey) - Contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates
- U. S. Gazetteer (US Census Bureau) - Used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server and obtain census data from the 1990 Census (as of printing; 2000 census data is being added as available); search for places, counties or MCDs by entering the name and state abbreviation (optional), or 5-digit zip code.
- GEOnet Names Server (International) - The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' (US BGN) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the US BGN. Approximately 20,000 of the database's features are updated monthly.
- Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer - Searchable by Kentucky county, site provides county summaries, relief and physiographic maps.
- Census Quick Facts – Kentucky - From the U.S. Census Bureau, page provides quick links to Kentucky county demographic information.
Maps
- Tiger Map Server - The US Census Bureau’s mapping service online; provides such services as online mapping, the complete searchable Tiger mapping service (with 2000 census data added as available), cartographic boundary files, downloadable resources, etc. All services can be manipulated to present desired geographic details.
- National Atlas of the United States - Begun in 1997, this online atlas delivers easy to use, map-like views of America's natural and sociocultural landscapes. Includes an interactive "Map Maker" page which allows the user to create maps of the nation, states, and counties using selected criteria from the areas of Agriculture, Biology, Boundaries, Climate, Environment, Geology, History, People, Transportation, Water, and Topography.
- The Office of Coast Survey's Historical Map & Chart Collection - Managed by the Cartographic & Geospatial Technology Program of the Coast Survey Development Laboratory, this site contains over 20,000 maps and charts from the late 1700s to present day, including some of the nation's earliest nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, geodetic surveys, city plans and Civil War battle maps.
- Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the United States - This atlas estimates wind energy resource for the United States and its territories,(a1). and indicates general areas where a high wind resource may exist. Includes an extensive table of contents and maps organized by region.
- American Memory Map Collections: 1500-2004 - From the Library of Congress' American Memory Collection, the focus of Map Collections is Americana and Cartographic Treasures of the Library of Congress. These images were created from maps and atlases and, in general, are restricted to items that are not covered by copyright protection. Collections include Cities/Towns, Conservation/Environment, Discovery/Exploration, General Maps, Cultural Landscapes, Military Battles/Campaigns, and Transportation/Communication. Complete or single collections can be searched by Keyword, Geographic Location, Subject, Creator, or Title.
- University of Texas at Austin Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection – Kentucky Maps - Includes a variety of state maps, as well as specialty maps from selected cities, historical cities, and national parks.

- National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) - With the passage of the proposed Defense Appropriations Bill for 2004, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) changes it name to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).

- CIA World Fact Book - For quick geographical facts on the nations of the world, choose the “Field Listing” link, then “Geography”; the resulting list provides direct access to basic geographic data by fields such as coordinates, boundaries, climate, etc.
- InfoNation (United Nations) - An easy-to-use, two-step database that allows you to view and compare the most up-to-date statistical data for the Member States of the United Nations.
- International Database (US Census Bureau) - A computerized source of demographic and socio-economic statistics for 227 countries and areas of the world; provides quick access to specialized information, with emphasis on demographic measures, for individual countries or selected groups of countries.
