How do I ...find journal and magazine articles?

  1. Use Periodical Indexes to identify an appropriate article by subject.
    • Electronic Indexes/Databases from the Libraries' Home Page; some full-text articles available)
    • Print Indexes (located in the Waterfield Reference Room; some subjects that are not covered well in the electronic indexes will require use of a print index)
  2. Each database will offer an advanced search.
    • Enter a single search term in the first window, or combine search terms using all the search windows.
      • Use the variety of limits offered under these search windows. (Suggestion: for most academic research, limit either to "scholarly", "peer-reviewed", or simply "journal" in the limits area.)
      • Some databases will provide full text. Click on the appropriate icon to retrieve.
  3. Use Find it at MSUto see if the library owns the periodical -- either in print, or electronically elsewhere in the system.
    • Find-a-Journal Article (by citation) - allows you to locate specific articles or journal titles anywhere in the library system.
    • On individual databases - the Find it at MSUservice is provided on the article abstract page; just click on the article title and look for the icon.
