How Do I.... Find Maps at the MSU Libraries

MSU Libraries:

Because of their format, maps are located in four places in the library.

  1. Maps bound together in book form (an atlas). These can be found by simply searching RacerTrac for "atlases" as a subject. If you want to locate a specific country's map, then search "[country name] maps" as a subject. Please note that a keyword search will not provide a useful list. The search "[country name] history maps" will produce a list of historical maps. Some of these atlases will be in the Reference Room in atlas stands, located along the back wall under the windows. Some atlases are in the Circulating Collection and may be checked out. Ask a librarian for help.
  2. Loose-leaf maps of various sizes - These can be found in the Map Collection found on the ground floor of Waterfield Library near the books with "Q" call numbers. A printed index to this collection is kept on the map cases found in this area, and at both the Reference and Circulation Desks. This collection contains a large assortment of US Geologic Survey maps, National Geographic maps, and CIA country and thematic maps. These maps may be checked out.
  3. Online map collections - While several online map collections can be accessed on the open internet, one of the nicest can be accessed from the library's Databases A-Z page. Go to that page. Select the Encyclopedia Americana. When the encyclopedia home page boots up, scroll down and choose "atlas" at the bottom of the page. This link allows you to choose topical, historical, and geographic maps for any region of the world. Easy to use; nice maps to print.
