Get Wired at the Library!
Thanks to the “Renaissance for Knowledge” fundraising effort, Murray State’s Waterfield Library is getting a new look! The first phase of the renovation project includes the addition of more than 40 Internet-accessible computers with Office XP and media software in the lobby area complemented by new furniture and flooring.
The new computers in the Waterfield Library lobby allow student, staff, and faculty log-in access to resources needed for research. These PCs have open access to the Internet with a selection of three browsers, Explorer, Firefox, and Opera, as well as programs necessary for viewing pages. There is a 3.5” floppy drive, CD-rewriter, and front USB ports for data storage as well as a front-access headphone jack. Software includes Windows XP, Office XP with Front Page, WS_FTP (Light ed.), FileZilla, Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0, IBM Record Now, Windows Media Player, and WinZip.
Wireless access laptops continue to be available for two-hour checkout in Waterfield at the circulation desk. These computers, too, have Windows XP, Office XP and open Internet access via MS Internet Explorer, as well as a CD-R/W drive and a USB port. External 3.5” floppy drives are also available for checkout.
The computer pods at the back of the Waterfield Library lobby support library resources. Online access is limited to MSU Web pages, research databases, and periodical publishers’ sites, as well as selected education and government sites that support the MSU curriculum. Acrobat Reader 6.0 is available for viewing and printing PDF files. (For access to Word or PowerPoint documents, use either the sit-down or laptop computers.)
A new information desk in the center of the lobby is staffed by both library and information technology personnel during all operating hours for directional and computer help. A self-checkout station will be added later in the fall.
