Eliza Hooks Memorial Collection

The Children's Award-Winning Book Collection is named in honor of Eliza Hooks. She was a longtime elementary teacher in Western Kentucky. She was known for her respect of students and her love of the language arts: poetry, reading, writing, and talking.

The collection is divided into three sections:

Children's Book Awards

Newbery Medal
Awarded each year to the most distinguished children's book from the previous year.
Caldecott Medal
Awarded each year to the most distinguished picture book from the previous year.
Batchelder Award
Awarded to a publisher of an outstanding American children's book that was originally published in a language other than English.
Pura Belpre Award
Awarded to the author/illustrator of a book that portrays the Latino cultural experience for children and youth.
Carnegie Medal
Awarded to the most outstanding video production for children.
Geisel Award
Awarded to the author/illustrator of the most outstanding book for beginning readers.
Odyssey Award
Awarded to the best audio book for children and/or young adults.
Sibert Award
Awarded to the best informational book for children and young adults.
Children's Notable Lists
Lists the best of the best in children's books, recordings, videos, and computer software as compiled by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of ALA.
Alex Awards
Awarded to ten books that were written for adults but appeal to youth ages 12 to 18.
Margaret A. Edwards Award
Recognizes an author's work in helping adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and in the world.
Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe Award for New Talent
Awarded to an African American author or illustrator in order to affirm new talent and to offer visibility to excellence in writing and/or illustration which otherwise might be formally unacknowledged within a given year.
Coretta Scott King Award
Awarded to outstanding books for young adults and children by African American authors and illustrators that reflect the African American experience.
William C. Morris YA Award
Awarded to a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens and celebrating impressive new voices in young adult literature.
Michael L. Printz Award
Award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature.
Schneider Family Book Award
Awarded to honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.
