Patents - Introduction

USPTO site provides a variety of useful patent information including information about the patent process for inventors.

Patent classifications:

  • International Patent Classification (IPC) - Used by the patent offices worldwide
  • Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) - an extension of the IPC and is jointly managed by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the USPTO.

Major types of patents:

  1. Utility Patents - "granted to anyone who invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or compositions of matters, or any new useful improvement thereof"
  2. Design Patents- "granted to anyone who invents a new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture"
  3. Plant Patents - "granted to anyone who invents or discovers and asexually reproduces any distinct and new variety of plant"
