Biographical / Historical Information: Mansfield Davis Jinkins was born on August 2, 1836 in Chatham County, North Carolina. Just prior to the Civil War, he may have been a student at the Cumberland School of Law at Lebanon, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Company K of the 31st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August of 1861. When the unit was reorganized on May 8, 1862 he was elected Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment. He died on November 30, 1862 possibly from wounds received at the Battle of Perryville.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a photocopy and transcription of letter written by Mansfield D. Jinkins to his father Elias S. Jinkins from Lebanon, Tennessee on November 5, 1860. The letter declares that the upcoming presidential election will lead to disunion and civil war.
