Alexander Saunders relocated from New York to Lexington sometime after 1815. By the early 1830s, brothers Levi and H. L. Jones had purchased tracks of land in McCracken County near Paducah. The Jones family resided in McCracken County and Paducah until the end of the Civil War when they moved to Evansville, Indiana.

Scope and Content: Collection consists of photocopied correspondence and legal documents associated with the Jones family of Paducah and McCracken County, Kentucky from 1783 to 1882. The bulk of the papers are land grants, property transfers and financial agreements retained by the family for generations. The papers contain correspondence describing significant historic, political and economical events in Kentucky during the first half of the 19th Century. Correspondence of note include letters written by James O’Bannon during the early 1840s discussing political activities in Kentucky and Tennessee, a letter from Mary Ann Lowry on March 30, 1843 from Turkey Run, Iowa describing Winnebago Indians murdering a nearby family and an order of banishment to Canada issued to “Mrs. Marous” from Union General E. A. Paine on August 6, 1864.
