Biographical / Historical Information: John H. Dinwiddie was a soldier in the 6th Missouri Cavalry during the American Civil War. He was born in Hardin County, Tennessee in 1837. He enlisted in the Union Army on January 28, 1862 at Tuscumbia, Missouri and was mustered into service on February 15, 1862 at Rolla, Missouri. He died of sickness on February 4, 1863.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a photocopied letter written by John H. Dinwiddie to his brother William K. Dinwiddie from a military camp near Helena, Arkansas (Camp Prentiss) on September 13, 1862. The letter discusses his health conditions, family issues and his fear of being killed in battle. He writes that he survived “several fights” and anxiously awaits the end of hostilities.
