Biographical / Historical Information: The Western Dark Fired Tobacco Growers’ Association was incorporated under the Bingham Cooperative Marketing Act of the Commonwealth of Kentucky on February 10, 1932. The original purpose was to market the crops of its members cooperatively, stabilize markets, handle, process, store and sell dark tobacco and dark tobacco products. The control of the Association was managed by a board of twelve directors, later reduced to eight, elected by the membership of the organization. The Association also administered tobacco programs and lobbied for growers in all the counties within the Jackson Purchase of Kentucky and Tennessee. On December 31, 2006, the Association officially disbanded after federal tobacco price support and supply programs were discontinued with legislation related to the America Jobs Creation Act of 2004.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of board meeting minutes, annual audit reports, crop certificates, market reports, crop advance schedules, membership lists and related organizational materials retained by the Western Dark Fired Tobacco Growers’ Association from 1932 to 2005. Included with the records are the board meeting minutes and annual audit reports of the Western District Warehousing Corporation (1933-1948), Murray Warehousing Corporation (1949-2005) and Western Dark Tobacco Packing Corporation (1951-1981).
