Biographical / Historical Information: General D. H. Hill was in command of General Joseph E. Johnston’s First Division (or Left Wing) stationed at Yorktown, Virginia. General Jubal A. Early served as a brigade commander under Hill. Yorktown was under siege by Union forces under General George B. McClelland from April 5 to May 3, 1862.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a letter written by Major General Daniel Harvey Hill at Yorktown, Virginia to Brigadier General Jubal A. Early at Shield’s Farm on April 27, 1862. Hill wrote to clarify his stance on Early’s wishes to command his own brigade and how it would impact the Confederate command structure under General Joseph E. Johnston.
