Biographical / Historical Information: Edmund Kirby Smith was a former Confederate military officer, who in 1892 was a professor of mathematics at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. A. E. Allen was a collector of autographed photographs of significant leaders during the American Civil War.

Scope and Content: Collection consists of a letter written by E. Kirby Smith at Sewanee, Tennessee to A. E. Allen of New York on October 29, 1892. Smith writes to Allen referring to individuals he identified in photographs sent to him by Allen. Photograph not included.
