Biographical / Historical Information: Robert E. Lee was serving as commander of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and East Florida from November 8, 1861 to March 3, 1862. Eliza Anne MacKay Stiles was the wife of former United States Congressman and speaker of the house in the Georgia House of Representatives William Henry Stiles. Mrs. Stiles was a longtime friend of General Lee dating back to when he was assigned to Cockspur Island on the Savannah River in 1829 as a junior office in the Corps of Engineers.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a letter written by Robert E. Lee to Mrs. William H. Stiles (Eliza Anne MacKay Stiles) from Savannah, Georgia on March 3, 1862. General Lee writes Mrs. Stiles in regards to collecting his wardrobe before departing Savannah for Richmond.
