Biographical / Historical Information: Albert Benjamin "Happy" Chandler, Sr. was born on July 14, 1898 in the farming and former coal mine town of Corydon, Henderson County, Kentucky. He attended Transylvania University in Lexington, KY after high school and played football, baseball, and basketball. Although he trained to be an officer while in college, he was never called for active duty during World War I. He eventually attended University of Kentucky's College of Law where he coached a number of college and high school sports teams. He held variety of elected positions. In 1929 he was elected to the Kentucky Senate from the 22nd District. He went on to serve as Kentucky's 36th Lt. Governor from 1931 to 1935 alongside Governor Ruby Laffoon, and then in 1935 he was elected Governor of Kentucky with Lt. Gov. Keen Johnson. In 1939, Chandler served in the United States Senate from Kentucky until 1945 when he became the 2nd Commissioner of Baseball. In 1955, alongside Lt. Gov. Harry Lee Waterfield, Chandler won the Kentucky gubernatorial race a second time and held office until 1959.
Scope and Content: The collection contains a few pieces of paper political ephemera from the 1950s and 1960s. Some pertain to A.B. Chandler and some pertain to Harry Lee Waterfield and Chandler, Chandler's second Lt. Governor.
