Biographical / Historical Information: Mancil J. Vinson was born on October 4, 1924 in Calloway County, Kentucky. He received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Murray State Teachers College in 1949 and a Master of Science Agricultural Education from the University of Kentucky in 1960. He served in the Unites States Army Air Corps during the Second World War. Following the war, he taught agriculture in public schools in Christian County, Kentucky. He was hired by the the Kentucky Department of Agriculture in 1952 and worked for the department for 16 years. He was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture in 1956 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1968. He was later appointed Director of Agricultural Marketing for three years. From 1968 to 1981, Vinson served as Director of Alumni Affairs at Murray State University.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, reports and office memoranda produced or received by Mancil J. Vinson from 1956 to 1968. The papers also contain subject files, newspaper clippings, published materials, ephemera and photographs associated with Vinson’s employment with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and as Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture. The papers include information on rural development, state fairs, farming and agricultural organizations and marketing of Kentucky farm products.
