Biographical / Historical Information: The Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union of Paducah, Kentucky was organized as the Atomic Energy Local 550 of the United Gas, Coke and Chemical Workers of America on January 5, 1953. Their first executive board meeting was held on January 17, 1953. The union was founded to establish a higher standard of living for its members and their families. United Gas, Coke and Chemical Workers of America later merged with the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union in February of 1955. Presently the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union is part of the United Steelworkers union via merger in 2005.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of the minutes of the executive board and general membership meetings of the United Gas, Coke and Chemical Workers of America, Local 550 of Paducah, Kentucky from 1953 to 1955 and the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union, Local 7-550 from 1955 to 1959. Included with the meeting minutes are handwritten notes of the meeting minutes, photographs of members and historical records related to the founding of the union in 1952.
