Biographical / Historical Information: William M. Matthews was the commissary sergeant for Company B, 2nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment (Confederate) during the first year of the American Civil War. He was a member of the Lexington (Kentucky) Chasseurs just prior to the start of the war. He joined the 2nd Kentucky as a private on July 5, 1861 at Camp Boone, Tennessee. He died of sickness at Knoxville, Tennessee sometime in 1862.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of a transcribed letter from William M. Matthews from Camp Boone, Tennessee to his aunt in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 5, 1861. The letter mentions the organization of three Kentucky regiments and his desire that Kentucky join the Confederacy.
