Abstract: Hugh Gingles discusses his experiences during the World War I. Prior to the war he was a farmer at Kirksey, Kentucky. He recalls how he was among the first to be drafted and how he decided it to be a just war. Other topics discussed in the interview include: the recruitment of several Jackson Purchase residents on the way to Camp Taylor in Louisville, the insufficiency and deficiencies of the new camps, being in the Depot Brigade, serving as a non-commissioned officer and attending training school, the different types of people in his company; the feelings of other people towards the war; the flu epidemic; the first big snow during the war and how things had changed when he returned from the war.
Biographical / Historical note: Hugh Gingles was a farmer from Kirksey, Kentucky. He was drafted and sent to Camp Taylor, Louisville, Kentucky for basic training. He served in the Depot Brigade at Camp Taylor for the duration of the First World War. Following the war, he was sent to Camp Pike near Little Rock, Arkansas.
