Abstract: Rowena Payne discusses foreign immigrants who settled the Land Between the Lakes region of Kentucky during the early part of the 20th Century. She describes the history of several communities and how they became named and the Night Rider raids on Rockcastle and Birmingham. Payne also recalls stories her parents and grandparents told regarding the Civil War, the educational system in the region and the evolution of her business at Sardis.

Biographical / Historical note: Rowena Payne was a resident of the Land Between the Lakes region of Kentucky for over thirty years. She was born in Cadiz, Kentucky in 1898. She relocated with her family to the Land Between the Lakes area in 1902. Her father farmed the "Barber Place." She was educated at the Hematite School and after graduation became a teacher. She taught at Ferguson Spring and Trigg Furnace. Payne eventually quit teaching to start a business at Sardis, Kentucky.
