Abstract: Marshall "Doc"; Smith is an African American who lived about two miles from Birmingham, Kentucky during the time of the Night Riders raid on the community in 1908. Smith describes the raid on Birmingham and what led to the violence. He also mentions the issues of tobacco pricing and the names some of Night Rider leaders in Marshall County, Kentucky.
Biographical / Historical note: Marshall Smith resided near Birmingham, Kentucky during the time of the Night Riders. Following the raid on the community his family moved to Lyon County, Kentucky.
