Abstract: Lochie Hart recalls her life in Murray, Kentucky during the first half of the 20th Century. She recalls her first home had no electricity, no icebox and only a tin stove for heat. She reminisced about helping her father plow the fields at the family farm. She describes how her family always traveled by horse and buggy and how her father taught her to make snake grass root tea for medicinal purposes. Hart mentioned that Calloway County had the highest number of tuberculosis cases in the State of Kentucky when she was a child. During the depression, she described that there were many limitations on everyday goods and produce.
Biographical / Historical note: Lochie Hart was born on November 28, 1899 and was a lifelong resident of Murray, Kentucky. Her parents were Catherine Cole and Oury Broach Hart. Her father raised cattle and her mother worked at home. She was an active member of North Pleasant Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In 1917, prior to graduating high school, she taught school for forty dollars a month. She graduated Murray High School in 1920 and later worked as a librarian at the high school. Hart was married on June 18, 1925. Her husband was a veteran of the Second World War and served as the Circuit Court Clerk. In 1932, Hart finished her husband's term as Circuit Court Clerk when he took a job at the Bank of Murray. She was also edited the Wickliffe newspaper during the Second World War.
