Abstract: Hazel Locke discusses her childhood in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and early adulthood in Paducah, Kentucky. She recalls attending a one-room schoolhouse as a child until the eighth grade and describes her household chores such as carrying wood, feeding livestock, housework and making lye soap. She mentions her childhood dream was to become a nurse. She stated the Great Depression as being "hard times" and many feared starvation. She recalls attending "play parties," which were parties with games, square dancing and live music. Locke told of her brother serving in the United States Navy and being stationed at Pearl Harbor during Japanese attack. She describes a "Brush Arbor Meeting"which was a revival under a brush pavilion constructed by the church members.
Biographical / Historical note: Hazel Locke was born in 1906 in Boot Hill, Missouri. Her family moved to Bollinger County when she was seven. Her father cut timber for a living and made railroad ties. She stopped attending school after the eighth grade and married at age seventeen. Her husband was a World War II veteran who worked as a carpenter. In 1950, her husband was hired by the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Paducah, Kentucky. They relocated to Coldwater, Kentucky.
