Abstract: Morris C. Garrott details his experiences during the Second World War. He discusses his duties as an enlisted soldier, training at the Officer Candidates School (OCS) and duties as the company commander of the 3537th Unit Replacement Company in the United States and Europe. He provides anecdotes of his experiences in the military, as well as individuals from Mayfield, Kentucky.

Biographical / Historical note: Morris C. Garrott was born in Mayfield, Kentucky in 1918.  Prior to the Second World War, he attended Murray State Teacher’s College (now Murray State University) from 1936 to 1940. He also worked at the local Piggly-Wiggly and for the Mayfield Messenger. He was drafted in Mayfield and sworn-in at Louisville on April 3, 1941. He was first sent to Fort Thomas, Kentucky then to Fort Knox, Kentucky as part of a Railhead Company. In February of 1942, he attended Officer Candidates School (OCS) for training. He was later stationed at Fort Livingston, Louisiana and Fort Sam Houston, Texas before being sent to France as the company commander of the 3537th Unit Replacement Company. He was en route to the Philippines at the end of war but rerouted to Boston, Massachusetts for discharge. After the war, he returned to work for the Mayfield Messenger as a journalist in Harlan, Kentucky.
