Historical Information: The Associates of Murray State University Libraries was established on April 24, 1981 to "promote the excellence of the University Libraries" and generate an "understanding of the importance of libraries in our society." The organization had over 150 hundred members its first year and included several committees. The organization sponsored book sales, speakers, musical recitals, festivals and various other programs and events across campus. The group was responsible for purchasing a rare first edition Historie de Kentucke by John Filson for the library in 1988. In 1990, the Associates of Murray State University Libraries sponsored its last event. The organization folded soon afterwards when support from the university and library declined.
Scope and Content: Collection consists of records generated and retained by the Associates of Murray State University Libraries from 1981 to 1996. The records contain constitution and by-laws, correspondence, memos, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, membership lists, notes, photographs and ephemera related to the activities of the organization and the events they sponsored.
