Historical Information: The Faculty Senate of Murray State University was formally established on November 14, 1974 after the ratification of the organization’s constitution. The origins of the Faculty Senate began in the summer of 1974 with the founding of Murray State University Faculty Organization. The Faculty Organization was an informal group which sought to empower the faculty in the governance of the university. On October 9, 1974, an ad hoc committee was formed to “study model structures for faculty senates”. By the end of October, the committee developed a constitution and by-laws. On the 11th and 12th of November, a vote of the faculty ratified the proposed constitution and elections for delegates was held on December 11, 1974. The Faculty Senate has served as an essential part of the University’s governance since the spring of 1975.
