Access Services manages interlibrary loan services for Murray State University faculty, staff and students.

On- Demand Purchasing Policy

The On-Demand Purchasing Policy serves to moderate the University Libraries’ access-oriented expenditures by providing a generic workflow for the purchasing of electronic media not readily available from Murray State University Libraries. Furthermore, this policy will serve as a point of reference for library personnel when addressing patron dissatisfaction or concerns regarding access to content. 

General Purchasing Guidelines

  • The requested item must not be available open access or from Murray State University Libraries. 

  • The cost of the item does not exceed $50

Guidelines by Patron Status

  • Requests by undergraduates are immediately sent out for ILL. Articles are only purchased for undergraduates if they cannot be obtained open access or from reciprocal lenders

    • If a request is exhausted with ample time before the need by date, it will next be sent back out to non-reciprocal lending libraries with a maxcost of $15.00.

    • Articles for undergraduates that cannot be supplied by either reciprocal or nonreciprocal lenders become candidates for on-demand purchasing via GetItNow, ScienceDirect, or Taylor & Francis tokens.  

    • The university libraries will purchase a maximum of 1 article per week per undergraduate student. 

  • Requests by graduate students and faculty staff members are immediately sent out for ILL. Articles for graduate students and faculty/staff members are only purchased if they cannot be obtained open access or from reciprocal lenders 

    • If a request is exhausted with ample time before the need by date, articles for graduates and faculty/staff members become candidates for on-demand purchasing via GetItNow, ScienceDirect, or Taylor & Francis tokens.  

    • The university libraries will purchase a maximum of 3 articles per week per graduate student, 5 articles per week per faculty member.
